Why is there fish on the stamp?
Ternopil city’s central landmark is Ternopil Pond (or Ternopil Lake), an artificial reservoir created in the 16th century that has long been stocked with fish. Fishing is a traditional activity there, and the pond has been an important part of the city’s identity — both for recreation and local cuisine featuring freshwater fish dishes. Study of Ukraine’s inland water annual fish catches shows that the Ternopil region reported a total extraction of 411.9 tons of aquatic before the full-scale invasion in 2022.
